Maxine Chernoff has published three books of short stories, as well as the novels, Plain Grief, American Heaven, and A Boy in Winter. Her most recent books are the story collection Some of Her Friends That Year (Coffee House Press) and the poetry collections World and Evolution of the Bridge: Selected Prose Poems (Salt Publications), The Turning and Among the Names (Apogee Press). With Paul Hoover she won the 2009 PEN Translation Award for The Selected Works of Friedrich Hölderlin from Omnidawn Press. She has recently taught in Prague and in Kenya. Chair of the Creative Writing Department at San Francisco State University, she lives in Mill Valley, California

Paul Hoover has published twelve books of poetry including Sonnet 56 (Les Figues Press, 2009), Edge and Fold (Apogee Press, 2006) and Poems in Spanish (Omnidawn, 2005). A new collection, desolation : souvenir, will be published by Omnidawn in 2012. With Maxine Chernoff, he has edited and translated Selected Poems of Friedrich Hölderlin (Omnidawn, 2008), which won the 2009 PEN-USA Translation Award. With Nguyen Do, he has edited and translated the Black Dog, Black Night: Contemporary Vietnamese Poetry (Milkweed Editions, 2008) and Beyond the Court Gate: Selected Poems of Nguyen Trai (Counterpath, 2010). Editor of the Norton anthology Postmodern American Poetry, he teaches at San Francisco State University. |
